August 2026 News

Hello, health fans.
It’s midsummer, we’re in the midst of yet another heatwave, and I’m sensing that many people are feeling rather weary and worn out.
One wonderful way to give your body a hydrating, antioxidant tonic is to make my broccoli sprout shot. You can buy ready-sprouted broccoli sprouts, which look rather like mustard and cress. They are great and make life much simpler. However, if you want to maximise the benefits, sprout your own. It is far cheaper, and the sprouts are at their most potent when they have only just begun to sprout. Use them as soon as you see the first tiny white shoots breaking through the seeds.
The process of blending the tiny sprouts activates something rather clever. Broccoli seeds are rich in glucoraphanin, which can be converted by an enzyme called myrosinase into sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is the key compound linked with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, detoxification support and potential anti-cancer effects. Broccoli sprouts are a particularly concentrated source compared with mature broccoli. For the conversion to happen, the seeds need to be chewed very thoroughly or blended, hence my blended drink. Fresh ginger and lime make it far more palatable, while adding further digestive, anti-inflammatory and general health benefits.
Broccoli Seed Sprout Drink
A simple way to support healthy detoxification, antioxidant defences and cellular resilience.
You will need
Organic broccoli sprouting seeds
A clean glass jar
Muslin cloth, sprouting lid or fine sieve
Fresh lime juice
Fresh ginger root
Filtered water
How to soak and sprout the seeds
Start small
Add 1–2 tablespoons of organic broccoli seeds to a clean glass jar.Soak overnight
Cover the seeds with plenty of filtered water and leave them to soak for 6–8 hours, or overnight.Drain and rinse
The next morning, drain the water away and rinse the seeds well with fresh water.Leave to sprout
Place the jar at an angle so any excess water can drain away. Keep the seeds slightly moist but not sitting in water.Rinse twice daily
Rinse and drain the seeds morning and evening.Use when just sprouting
After around 24–48 hours, the seeds should begin to show a tiny white tail. This is the ideal stage for the drink: just as they begin to sprout.
How to make the drink
Add the freshly sprouted broccoli seeds to a blender.
Add Juice of ½–1 fresh lime, a small piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and around 150–250 ml filtered water
Blend well until smooth.
Drink immediately for maximum freshness.
How often to have it
Enjoy this broccoli sprout drink 1–3 times a week.
Important hygiene note
Sprouts need to be kept very clean. Always use clean jars and fresh water, rinse well, and discard the sprouts if they smell unpleasant, become slimy or look mouldy.
One gentle caution: raw sprouts may not be suitable for anyone who is significantly immunocompromised, pregnant, very elderly or recovering from a serious illness, unless advised by their healthcare practitioner.
Podcast news
I will shortly be meeting up with the very fabulous Will Harlow again for another podcast interview. Last summer, Will and I discussed gut and metabolic health. This summer, we are focusing on GLP-1 medications: the benefits, the challenges, and how to stay fit and healthy while navigating a greatly reduced appetite.
Will is so impressive. His incredibly popular YouTube and Instagram channels provide a staggering amount of free content. Look out for our conversation this autumn.
